How to translate messages quickly with Gboard and Microsoft SwiftKey

Google’s Gboard and Microsoft’s SwiftKey have a built-in translation tool that will let you send and decipher messages received in different languages without having to switch between a translation app. Gboard’s translation function works for Android and iOS devices. Even though Microsoft SwiftKey is available for Android and iOS devices, its built-in translator is currently available for the former only.

Here’s how you can translate messages with Gboard on Android and iOS devices:

Gboard for Android:

1.

Install Gboard from the Play Store

2.

Launch Settings. Search for “Keyboard & input method” or “Languages & input”.

3.

Tap Manage keyboards and make Gboard the default keyboard.

4.

Now when you type with Gboard, you will see a Translate icon above the top row of keys.

5.

Tap this icon to switch to Translate mode.

6.

Choose the input-output languages you want to work with, enter the message you want to send and tap the Translate message.

7.

The translated text will appear in the message field. Either send it or edit your message again.

8.

Follow the same steps when you receive a text in a difference language. The only additional steps would be to copy-paste the text into the translator box.

Note: The steps are similar if you choose to install Microsoft SwiftKey for Android.

Gboard for iOS:

1.

Install Gboard from the App Store.

2.

Open the app and tap Keyboard settings.

3.

Tap Get Started and then Enable full access.

4.

Tap Get Started again.

5.

You will be taken to the Settings. Here, select Keyboards.

6.

Enable Allow Full Access and tap Allow. This will let you use the translate function in Gboard.

7.

Open any messenger app and tap in the message text box to bring up the keyboard. Long-press the globe icon in the bottom left corner of the screen and select Gboard.

8.

Tap the Translate icon above the top row of keys. Agree to the privacy message that pops up.

9.

Now choose the languages you want to type in and get the translation. Tap the Translate button.

10.

Tap the translated text to send it as a message.

11.

When you want to translate a missive you received: Long-press the text, select copy, tap the Translate icon, paste the text message and tap the Translate button.
